Guided tour of Begastri archaeological site, Cehegin North Murcia, Sat and Sun 17th and 18th July
Sunday 18th of July 2010
Event type: Daytime
The archaeological site at Begastri, Cehegin is open every Saturday and Sunday from 9am-1.30pm.
This is an interesting site in the North of Murcia which is currently undergoing works to construct a new visitor centre which will enable visitors to discover more information about the site without the need for a guide. Until that happens, visitors are able to visit this site on a saturday and sunday morning to view the progress being made in these excavations.
{image2}The Begastri archaeological site has been the subject of archaeological excavations for many years now and covers an extensive area, 2km from Cehegin in an elevated position in an area known as Cabezo Roenas , close to the course of the Rio Quipar.
The site sits on a rocky outcrop, and the town would have been protected by a 5mtr thick wall surrounding the settlement.
Strong evidence exists of the original Iberic settlement, but it was the arrival of the Romans who converted the town into an important defensive outpost and constructed substantial public buildings, the town of res publica begastresium cultivating international trading links with the greeks and roman settlements throughout Europe, evidence existing of substantial wealth and international trade.
{image3}The era of Visgoth occupation saw the town increasing in importance and size, and during the 7th and 8th centuries became the centre of muslim power in the area, but following a series of revolts in the 8th and 9th centuries, it fell into a slow decline and there is clear evidence that by the 13th century it had been completely deserted.
For directions to the site, go to the

Once a year chance to visit the Cueva Negra, Caravaca de la Cruz
Sunday 18th of July 2010
Event type: Daytime
Important pre-neanderthal remains have been found in the excavations of the Cueva Negra, Caravaca de la Cruz
The Region of Murcia holds some extremely important archaeological sites, amongst them the Cueva Negra at la Encarnacion in the municipality of Caravaca de la Cruz, and the Sima de las Palomas in the Cabezo Gordo of Torre Pacheco, both of which are being excavated under the directorship of Professor Michael J. Walker of the University of Murcia.
Both sites hold very important information about the development of the human race, and the Neanderthals who inhabited these areas, and both have yielded substantial materials which are of special importance to the archaeologists studying their density and use of local natural resources.
On Sunday 18th July, Professor Walker is leading a visit to the Cueva Negra in La Encarnacion. where remains have been found dating back 800,000 years, considerably earlier than they were originally believed to be
Within the last two archaeological summer seasons rodent remains have been found which date back more than 500,000 years, and teeth which were believed to have been Neanderthal, are now believed to belong to Homo heidelbergensis, the precursor of the Neanderthal, making the site a very valuable source of information for researchers.
The site is only excavated during the summer months and attracts students from across Europe, who take part in field schools, with some financial support from the Ayuntamiento of Caravaca de la Cruz.
The cave is only open to the public on this one day a year, and the site in Torre Pacheco also holds an open day, usually a couple of weeks later.
Anyone who would like to visit the cave is invited to be at the door on the church in La Encarnacion at 10am on Sunday 18th, where they will be escorted to the site of the cave.
It is advisable to wear strong walking shoes and a hat, and carry water together with a snack.

Los Bluesfalos, 9pm
Tickets 12 euros
Standard bearers for blues sung completely in Spanish, the Bluesfalos are known throughout Spain as a classic act of blues rock in Spanish. Their echoes have reached the best blues magazine in the world, Living Blues, edited by the University of Mississippi, which has published many positive reviews about this group from Murcia. Not much more can be said to blues aficionados in the region of Murcia regarding this group, who is a staple of musical nights in many parts of our geography, and who will finally debut in Jazz San Javier in what they hope will be a long remembered concert.
Two giants of contemporary music, guitarist and singer Robben Ford and saxophonist Bill Evans; two great fusion specialists and old friends of the San Javier Jazz Festival, team up with a new project which fusions blues, country and jazz. They will be joined by an all-star band which includes banjo virtuoso Ryan Cavanaugh, the brilliant Cameroonian bass player Etienne N'bappè, who for many years formed part of The Zawinul Syndicate, and the spectacular drummer Toss Panos, who amazed us during his previous performance alongside Robben Ford and Larry Carlton. It will be a very interesting concert for blues and jazz-fusion lovers

These are lovely, festive occasions, as the boats which accompany her on her journey are packed to the brim with people, and decorated with ribbons, flowers or festive decorations.
Following the procession, the fishermen pay homage to the fisherman of the year.
At 10.30pm, there's a dance with mobile disco at the Explanada Barnuevo, free of charge.

Free guided tour of modernist, Cartagena, 21st July
Wednesday 21st of July 2010
Event type: Daytime
Right throughout July and August, the MURAM, Regional Museum of Modern Art, are giving free guided tours of the interesting modernist buildings which give Cartagena its' characteristic elegance.
The modernist movement was fuelled by the expansion in wealth during the late 19th century as industrial development worldwide consumed vast quantities of minerals, mined in the Cartagena area, from mines which were owned by the elite, who used their vast wealth to build houses in the latest style, the modernist style.
Cartagena is full of these elegant buildings, with their distinctive curves, dramatic wrought ironwork and designs which were daring and revolutionary, breaking the mould and creating something which had its own unique feel. The secret is in the detail, sensuous curves, carefully designed wrought iron, carving, moulding, glasswork, every detail counted.
Leading the architects in Cartagena was Victor Beltri, who produced several outstanding buildings throughout the city, and left his own distinct stamp on the face of modern Cartagena.
These tours will be held every Wednesday and Saturday throughout July and August, leaving at 10.30am and 12.30pm, and are completely free.
The MURAM are happy to accommodate English speaking visitors, but need a minimum of 10 people to book an English speaking tour guide, and want to try and keep the group size to about 15 people. The main MURAM guide does speak english, so if she's leading the tour she'll be able to help you and give some commentary in english on any day. Just make sure they know you're english when you book.

Rondalla performing free in the gardens of Alhama, 21st July
Wednesday 21st of July 2010
Event type: Evening
Alhama de Murcia are running their annual programmes of free musical events in the gardens of Alhama and in its pedanias, districts throughout the summer.
Each week on a Wednesday evening a performance by a local Rondalla will take place in Alhama itself, in one of the many garden areas which are dotted throughout the town.
Rondallas are traditional musical groups who perform at local events. They're composed of several performers, traditionally with a variety of stringed instruments, namely the guitar, the mandolin and the lute. There's usually at least one singer and although Rondallas were traditionally string only, many incorporate percussion as well.
The word rondalla comes from ronda, which is a serenade.
Groups like this are certainly known to date back well into the 16th century, although the phrase rondalla is certainly 19th century.
It's really nice music, relaxing, comfortable and easy on the ear, and you'll find it very comfortable sitting listening to this. It's very Spanish, but very easy on the ear.
21st July, Aires de espuna
Performing in the Jardin de Santa Barbera at 10pm
( this is in the top left hand corner of Alhama, between Calle Bravo and Calle Santa Barbara., Click for map, Jardin de Santa Barbara.)
The concerts are free.
