Free guided tours of Murcia, Sat 10th July

Saturday 10th of July 2010
Event type: Daytime

Free guided tours of Murcia

free guided tours of MurciaEvery Saturday a free guided tour of what's known as "Classical Murcia" takes place, which is a guided tour showing the best of the more popular tourist sites in Murcia City.

The tour is designed very much  an introduction to Murcia for those who have perhaps not really explored it before and is a good way to orientate yourself around the most interesting parts of the city.

The idea is to give you a taste of what Murcia has to offer, so the visit takes in quite a few locations, in the hope that you will go back on your own and spend a bit more time exploring the things that interest you.

The tour is in Spanish, but most of the guides who work the city tours speak English, so make sure you let them know you would appreciate a bit of info in English, and they'll do their best to accommodate you, depending on the group size.

Most of the places you go to will have English language literature available to collect.

The tours leave from the Plaza Belluga Tourist Information Office at 11am and to book a place, call 968 358 749 from Monday to Friday, 10am-1pm and 5pm-7pm

The best parking for Plaza Belluga is in the underground car park right on the waterfront opposite the Glorieta de Espana. As you drive in to central Murcia along the riverbank, you'll find it on the right hand side just past the big bridge entering the old quarter of Murcia. Click Plaza Belluga for map

MTV Music Night , MIKA headlining, FREE concert, Caravaca

Saturday 10th of July 2010
Event type: Evening

MIKAThis weekend , the 10th July, is the big night for pop fans with the Murcia MTV Music night concert taking place in Caravaca de la Cruz, headlining top UK act, MIKA.

In a supporting role will be the madrilenean group Pignoise, a popular pop act who are gaining widespread popular support throughout Spain.

If you don't know who they are, click Te Entiendo for a listen.

Also on stage for their first performance in such a large-scale event are The Leadings, an up and coming Murcian group who are tipped for big things in the future.

Click for a listen, The Leadings, Friday

Following the headline act of top UK artist MIKA are Hercules and the Love Affair and DJ Amable.

Click here for more info about MIKA and to hear one of his best known tracks.

A rough idea of timings for those driving into Caravaca de la Cruz from across the region is as follows:

Doors open in the Recinto Ferial at  7.30pm

The Leadings, 9.30pm

Pignoise 10.20pm

MIKA 11.50pm

Hercules and The Love Affair 1.30am

DJ Amable ( Razzmatazz 2.40am.)

For those who haven't been to one of these big events a warning. Last year we had our water bottles confiscated at the entry, to prevent them being thrown around, and back packs searched to make sure we weren't carrying anything offensive, resulting in the necessity to purchase very small drinks at very high prices inside the fenced off area. It may or may not be the same this year, so hydrate thoroughly before entering and wear voluminous shorts if attempting to smuggle in small bottles of water.

The Recinto ferial is on the outskirts of Caravaca, not in the centre, and the concert is being held inside the Recinto, which only has capacity for maybe 15-20,000 people. As more are expected to show up, early estimates said 25-35,000, and the plan was to project the event onto large screens in a football field close by, so if you want to make sure you're in the recinto, you need to be there in good time.

The Recinto is at the white trees entrance to Caravaca, which is the road running from Cehegin, so come off the main road at CEHEGIN, not the first turning, the second turning for Cehegin, which actually has taken you past Cehegin, and turn left through the white trees for Caravaca.

It' s likely you'll be directed to parking along the road by the old railway station, and there will be a good deal of traffic as many will drive from Murcia for this concert.

Have a great night, and don't miss the chance to see this amazing top pop act for free here in the Region of Murcia.

If you want to stay over, make sure you get onto the Caravaca tourist office earlier rather than later.

Competition of tunas, these are great fun, really good music

Saturday 10th of July 2010
Event type: Evening

Certamen de tunasThere's a really interesting event taking place in the Cuartel de Artilleria in Murcia between the 8th and 10th July, called the Certamen Internacional de Tunas, Barrio del Carmen.
In this case, a tuna is not a fish, it's a musical group, and this is a big competition between tunas from all over the world, not just from Spain.

We first came across tunas during the Fiestas de Primavera, when we decided to go along to a performance just to find out what on earth a tuna was, and were absolutely blown away by the evening of free entertainment which we enjoyed.

A tuna is composed of musicians and vocals, and they perform harmonious songs. It's almost impossible to describe, but the music is melodious, harmonious, almost barber shop in some cases, performed with great humour and enthusiasm and sometimes there's a bit of dance thrown in as well. Depending on the origin of the tuna, sometimes the style is south American, sometimes very Spanish, at other times it's almost operatic.
The performers are costumed, the atmosphere is happy and everyone has a great time. It's really unique and really enjoyable.

The competitions are free to watch and if you don't have anything else in the diary, why not go along and see what's happening, you may be pleasantly surprised.

The big night is on the Saturday, with the largest number of participants, and there's always a spot of tapas on offer for those who go along and support the event.

We've found a clip on Youtube of a tuna, but it's hard to say what is actually typical as they're all so unique.
Click youtube

Click for map, Cuartel de Artilleria, Murcia

( The map is a bit confusing, as the Cuartel is located where pointer I says the professional school of music is, but basically it has several entrances and is a vast, sprawling place which fills the space where the I is located, it's the old military barracks.)

Festival de folklore en La Palma, 10th July, Big night for dancing

Saturday 10th of July 2010
Event type: Evening

La Palma, Cartagena Folk Festival, Cartagena has a rich tradition of folk music and each year a Folk Festival is held in La Palma on the outskirts of Cartagena, where the Grupo folklorico Ciudad de Cartagena have their home. The fiesta has a varied programme of  workshops and talks about matters relating to campo life, as well as the folk dancing and music which make it such a pleasure to visit.

We've been along to quite a number of these folk events, which are colourful, entertaining and thoroughly enjoyable, the music infectious, and the whirling dancers the most authentic representation of traditional Spanish country music and dance you'll find.

Such is the dedication to authenticity and the traditions of the campo, that the ladies hand-make all the costumes from scratch, patiently sewing on every sequin by hand, making their own lace, embroidering the delicate designs which grace the silk skirts and stitching their own stockings, a labour of love.

The festival is held on the outskirts of La Palma at the Estacion Experimental Agroalimentaria, " El Palmeral de las Casas Grandes".

It's in Calle de Antonio Serrano, in the building known as the UPCT Centro de Investigacion, it's at the end of the road and is easy to find once you're in the right street. Click for Calle Antonio Serrano

This is an agricultural experimental station , and if you want to learn about palm trees, this is the place to come. The talks this year are all about the cultivation and care of palms, but are in Spanish, so unless you have a good degree of Spanish, will be difficult to follow.

Programme as follows:

Saturday 10th July

8pm. Reception for the visiting groups

8.30pm. Giants and Cabezudos take to the streets of La Palma . This is a parade in which the folk groups and giant papier mache heads make their way from the Casa del folklore ( calle Progreso) to the agricultural centre which is the location of the rest of the events. The whole will be accompanied by folk musicians.

10pm. Festival Folklorico.

Performances by the following folk groups

Grupo Infantil, Santa Florentina from La Palma

Grupo Folklorico " Ciudad de Cartagena" from La Palma

Cuadrilla, " Aire Serrano" from Yuste, Albacete

Association Cultural de Musica y Danza Grupo Balalita, from Almodovar del Campo, Ciudad Real

Festivities of the Virgen del Carmen

The Virgen del Carmen is the patron saint of not only sailors, but also the Spanish fleet, and she protects and cares for fishermen throughout the year. As a town with strong connections to the sea, it's natural that this celebration should be important in San Javier.

At 8am, there's what's known as a Diana floreada and pasacalles. This is basically a wake-up call to the townspeople to come along and participate in the day and usually involves a band marching around making a lot of noise, and letting off a few cohetes- noisy rockets - to make sure everyone's awake..

10.30pm. Misa huertana celebrated in the Plaza del Segura.

A misa huertana is a sung mass, usually with the musical accompaniment of a Cuadrilla, a folk group and these are happy celebrations, very often with the participants in costume, although every one is different.

Following the musical mass, the Virgen is carried through the streets of the Barrio de Pescadores, the fishermans district,  in procession.

Following the procession there is a dance, a verbena, with the group" Nuevo sonido" performing in the Barrio del Carmen.

The centre of this district is the little church of La Iglesia del Carmen, which is in Plaza del Segura, and which is where the evening dance will take place.

17th July

From 10.30pm

"El show del Pulpo" the 80's show band.

This is popular music going back to the 80's, performed by "the Octopus" and his band. They're very popular and good fun to watch, albeit very Spanish- you'll see!.

No charge, Explananda Barnuevo

18th July

At 9.30am. Procession maritime.

The image of the Virgen del Carmen is taken on a marine procession, in the fishing boats she protects. She is taken onto the boat at the Playa de Barnuevo, put on at the fishing wharf, and taken out by the fishermen. These are lovely, festive occasions, as the boats which accompany her on her journey are packed to the brim with people, and decorated with ribbons, flowers or festive decorations.

Following the procession, the fishermen pay homage to the fisherman of the year.

At 10.30pm, there's a dance with mobile disco at the Explanada Barnuevo, free of charge.

Event type: Evening

El paretonThe Barrio of San Juan en Las Lomas of El Pareton is celebrating its fiestas this weekend in honour of San Juan

 Saturday 10th July

10pm. There is an Encuentro de Cuadrillas.

Ciuadrillas are musical groups formed with string and percussion instruments and traditionally play at all the celebrations of everyday murcian traditional life.

They accompany their instruments with a good round of vocals, and play a good cross section of folky type music.

If you've never been to an encuentro of cuadrillas before, give it a try, they're informal, great fun and the music is very easy on the ear. It's quite folky and traditionally Spanish, but also very relaxing and good humoured.

There are cuadrillas participating in this event from:

"Palmera Melon" from Murcia

Cuadrilla de El pareton

Grupo Santiago from Totana

Dancers coming in from Mula

At midnight there's a flamenco performance, followed by hot chocolate for all.

11th July

9pm. Celebration of mass in honour of San Juan , sung by the Rondalla of El Pareton.

( A Rondalla is a different type of music group, fairly similair to a cuadrilla)

10pm. Performance of dance and music, given by Riki Andaluz Chico and his dancers

Following this, more hot chocolate.

There is a recinto set up for this, which means there's beer and tapas on offer, but all we can find out about directions is that it' s " down by the woodyard. "

El Pareton , however, is not exactly a large place and it shouldn't be too hard to find.

Guided tour of Begastri archaeological site, Sat and Sun 10th and 11th June

Sunday 11th of July 2010
Event type: Daytime

The archaeological site at Begastri, Cehegin is open every Saturday and Sunday from 9am-1.30pm.

This is an interesting site in the North of Murcia which is currently undergoing works to construct a new visitor centre which will enable visitors to discover more information about the site without the need for a guide. Until that happens, visitors are able to visit this site on a saturday and sunday morning to view the progress being made in these excavations.

{image2}The Begastri archaeological site has been the subject of archaeological excavations for many years now and covers  an extensive area, 2km from Cehegin in an elevated position in an area known as Cabezo Roenas , close to the course of the Rio Quipar.

The site sits on a rocky outcrop, and the town would have been protected by a 5mtr thick wall surrounding the settlement.

Strong evidence exists of the original Iberic settlement, but it was the arrival of the Romans who converted the town into an important defensive outpost and constructed substantial public buildings, the town of res publica begastresium cultivating international trading links with the greeks and roman settlements throughout Europe, evidence existing of substantial wealth and international trade.

{image3}The era of Visgoth occupation saw the town increasing in importance and size, and during the 7th and 8th centuries became the centre of muslim power in the area, but following a series of revolts in the 8th and 9th centuries, it fell into a slow decline and there is clear evidence that by the 13th century it had been completely deserted.

For directions to the site, go to the

Oficina de Turismo

Plaza del Castillo 1

Tel 968 723 550

Santiago speaks excellent english and is very helpful and friendly. He is also able to arrange overnight accommodation if you are going to the north for an overnight stay.

Plaza Belluga festival, MurciaThe VII Festival Belluga begins in Murcia on the 1st July, with four superb free performances scheduled between the 1st and 13th July.

This event is sponsored by La Fundacion Cajamurcia, as part of its' Obra social programme, and takes place annually in the atmospheric setting of the Plaza Belluga, with the cathedral as a backdrop.

There are 2500 seats provided for each event, but they usually fill up fairly quickly, so it's advisable to arrive in plenty of time if you'd like one, as around 5000 people attend.

The performances start at 10pm, which means that the air has cooled and gives time to perhaps visit a museum or exhibition first, as most of the salons and museums close at 9pm, have a cooling drink and then enjoy a top class free concert or dance performance in front of the cathedral.

This years' programme:

Thursday 1st July

The Symphonic Orchestra of the Region of Murcia, performing 3 pieces from Beethoven; Leonore Overture no 3, Symphony number 7 in A major, ( Wellingtons victory symphony) and Symphony number 5

Tuesday 6th July

Coral Discanthus and the Jazz Group, Mediterraneo Quartet perform a variety of favourite hits from Broadway musicals.

Thursday 8th July

La Orquesta Sinfonica Teatro Castelar and the soloist Yolanda Marin, give a concert called " El Septimo arte", performing great vocal classics . This programme usually features popular contemporary tracks performed by a superb soprano with orchestral accompaniment, so the tracks chosen are often songs such as the title track of the film Titanic, films such as the Wizard of Oz and Evita.

13th July

The superb Ballet Espanol de Murcia, the company of Carmen and Matilde Rubio who performed here recently at the Cam's Cumbre Flamenca. ( The photo was taken at that event.)

They really are superb, this is ballet flamenco, Spanish ballet, which combines classical ballet with Spanish influences to create a spine tingling dance form which is perfect for the setting of the Plaza Belluga.

This evening they are performing a piece called Penelope, accompanied by the legendary flamenco guitarist Carlos Pinana.

This is the easiest drive in parking for Murcia. Coming off the motorway, follow signs for City Centre( Centro ciudad). You'll pass the gardens of Malecon on the right, go past a bridge, then get in the right hand lane and drive straight down into the underground car parking. If this is full, there's another one slightly further back along the riverbank by the market place Veronicas, so turn around and you'll find it on the right hand side almost opposite to the bridge.
