Info about the 112 emergency call centre Every emergency call made to 112 in the region of Murcia is filtered through the system quickly, initially to establish the language of the caller then the location and then the type of emergency. The location of the caller is rapidly established, if through a land line and depending on location quickly as to general area if by mobile telephone. It is important to try if using a mobile phone to describe exactly your location and to keep the mobile turned on. The calls are then monitored from the location to both the central command centre and also to the local emergency bases, this information is on screen as to satellite mapping and is recorded both electronically and manually. An assessment of the type of emergency is made as to fire, police and ambulance and which type of ambulance is required, at the time of our visit there were three qualified doctors determining the requirements of each incoming medical call. The response time is very quick and new technology is underway which will allow mobile phones with cameras to be used by the callers to show the extent of the problem. The 112 Emergency Call Centre in Murcia has recently been the recipient of an award from the European Community Council for advanced technological systems.
Some 150 people staff the centre which is now 10 years old and in that time has received over 10,000,000 yes ten million calls. The total number of attended incidents was in excess of half a million. The Centre monitors for all types of emergencies including forest fires and has access to helicopters for fire extinguishment , they also monitor the coastal problems. and road traffic accidents and the other accidents as well as the health problems requiring ambulance attendance. The centre prides itself on the public’s positive attitude to the 112 system, which receives no financial help from Brussels but has to accept new guidelines and directives from that source and is funded only from the Province of Murcia’s government.
