The Ayuntamiento of Cartagena have been getting a bit of a roasting this week about the planned development at Cala Reona, which will destroy the last "Virgin Beach" within the municipality.

Ecological campaigners ANSE totally overwhelmed the IT department of the Town Hall with a deluge of emails sent by protestors, complaining officially, as residents of the municipality, about the planned development.
Their web page has a protest letter ready scripted which those wishing to sign the petition can email off to the Town Hall, and more than 4000 people have done so throughout the last few days.
The Concejal for Urban development answered the protests of ANSE saying , " This is a decision taken months ago and it won't change now, " said Joaquin Segado, Concejal for Urban projects, emphasizing that the planned urbanization will be of minimal density, will have a fringe of protected natural space around it and will not impact on the beach area at all, the protected areas conforming with the maps of the Autonomous Community, not touching places where protected species are physically growing.
He attacked ANSE , calling them irresponsible, saying that they were acting in their own self- interest and not thinking for the good of the City of Cartagena.
He said that ANSE had attacked the construction of a new airport, of the high speed train link, the new motorways and was upset because the council were converting the Santa Florentina and San Isidoro batteries into an Oceonographic Centre for the Region of Murcia, and not making them into a wildlife interpretation centre as ANSE had requested.
The official document from the Town hall said that the council was complying fully with the documentation as was legally required, and that the development would only impact on a 700 metre long strip of beach, from a total of 107km of undeveloped coastline and was a viable development for the economic growth of Cartagena, which has one of the most rapidly growing pockets of unemployment in the region.
They also accused ANSE of lying, saying that the 1987 Plan general did not classify all of the area in which the development is to take place as non-construction land, only a tiny part of it.
ANSE are unrepentant, and are going ahead with their protest march on the 14th March, which leaves from the Upper Supermarket , next to the Petrol Station at Cabo de Palos at 11am.
