Whats on Mar Menor, enjoying cricket in the Region of Murcia
The Region of Murcia has astonishing sporting facilities with regular events that arent particularly well publicised, so many ex-pats are never aware of the variety of events which they could attend at no cost and enjoy.
One such sport is cricket, which has an enormous following back in the UK and is healthily supported out here with the Spanish cricket league.
The matches mainly take place at the superb facilities of the La Manga Club, centrally placed near to the Mar Menor and with good access from across the region.
There are a few fixtures played at Alfaz del Pi near to Alicante, but the majority are here in the Region of Murcia, taking place most weekends right throughout the summer.
Anyone with an interest in cricket is welcome to come and watch the matches for free, and take advantage of all the facilities on offer.
Youll find the standard excellent and if the one thing you always enjoyed on a Saturday was the thwack of a cricket ball hitting a bat, then its here for you in Murcia, so all you have to do is come along and enjoy it.

A good incentive to overcome my diving problems, by Laurence

Diving in the Region of Murcia, overcoming issues by undertaking shore dives and its amazing where these sports can take you....nbsp
One of the main reasons for choosing Murcia as a home was the Mar Menor, and the stretch of Mediterranean coastline which ran along the back of it, the combination of these two offering an unparalleled chance to practice a vast range of water sports.
Diving was top of the list for things I wanted to try, the waters in this area being renowned for their crystal clear visibility, interesting rock formations, wrecks and caves, as well as exciting range of marine life.
I duly embarked on a Padi course, learning the basics in a swimming pool, progressing to a beach dive, then off the edge of boats, rapidly gaining confidence and feeling comfortable in the marine environment, but once out of kindergarten and into the world of real diving, started to experience a few problems and soon lost interest.
The problem was, that friends who were enthusiastic divers were determined that I should enjoy the sport as much as themselves, and were keen to show me sites they enjoyed and buddy up for these dives.
But as a novice diver, the pace was just too fast, I felt pressured, pushed, uncomfortable, and after the dives I felt ill, physically ill, and decided that maybe diving and my body just didnt agree with each other, so I stopped.
Time passed, then one day the phone rang.
nbsp
Its funny how things lead us from one path to another. Readers of the site will probably have gathered by now that my wife has a passionate green streak, her reason for choosing this Region as it contained the house that she could see as a green retreat.
After a few planning related issues which took several years to resolve, we finally built that solar and wind powered eco friendly home, acquired the mandatory flock of sheep, goats and chickens and recycled manically, meeting people along the way who care about the same things. One day, whilst launching myself off a hilltop, I discovered that my feared Medio Ambiente inspector was a fellow paraglider, a massive ice breaker if ever there was one. A few months later we were attending a Romeria, when he wandered up with a plateful of paella and beer and asked if wed like to plant some pine trees on our finca, which weve incorporated into a network of protected wildlife reserves, and duly appeared at the house with a group of ecologically minded people who also happened to be archaeologists, my wifes other great passion.
So eggs and honey are exchanged, we come home to find honey tied to the chain with Esparto grass if weve had an unexpected visit, and count ourselves lucky to know them. They worked on the Phoenician boat excavation in Mazarron, so took us to the ARQUA museum in Cartagena, obtained permission for us to use the research library and have encouraged us to learn more about the subaquatic archaeology in this area, which we have done, enthusiastically.
nbsp
So then came the phone call.
Would my wife like tonbspmeet the archaeologists working on a National geographic site locally, and as it was a subaquatic site, would I like to dive with them and shift a few rocks as a volunteer.
Would I???????
Only one problem, out of date paperwork and loss of confidence.
nbsp
nbsp
The first thing I had to arrange was a medical which took 10 minutes at a local doctors for a certificate and then a revision dive with a certified Instructor. A friend with the necessary qualifications arranged everything for me and took me out one Friday morning to take me through my paces and ensure I was up to date with the necessary basics to continue diving safely. One thing he recommended to me was to try and get in a few dives before I joined the archaeologists as it would be his professional reputation at stake should I make a complete fool of myself.
nbsp
nbsp
Bearing this in mind I chatted to the guys at Adventure Divers of la Manga Club, they suggested that shore dives might be a better way of overcoming my sickness problems, as the pace was more gentle, there was nobody pressuring me and I could enter the water without being in a boat. They explained to me that novice divers often experience panic, or sickness, which probably accounted for the symptoms Id experienced, and the pressure of being pushed to descend and ascend more rapidly than I was comfortable with would exacerbate my symptoms.
A shore dive meant I could enter the water at my own pace, without the stress of having to exit a boat straight into deep water, and control my dive gradually, slowly swimming out into deeper waters.
They took me to a beach by the Cabo de Palos lighthouse, and I had two great dives, comfortable, confident, relaxed, and experienced none of the symptoms Id had before, and the pleasure ofnbsp exploring the underwater rocks and meadows of posidonia which surround this coastline gave me a confidence and pleasure which really surprised me.
I cant recommend enough to anyone who has lost their confidence, hasnt dived for a long time, or experienced these medical issues like myself, try these shore dives, its a totally different world to a boat dive, and it changed my whole experience to one of enjoyment, from one of trepidation.
By the time I went out with the archaeological team, I was confident, relaxed and in control, and overwhelmed by the experience of being with a team who earn their living underwater.
This is a grueling job. The boat left at 7am, which meant we were loading air tanks, supplies and equipment by 6.30am. A 45 minute dive was followed by a 3 hour break, to ensure the body decompressed fully, even though we were only diving at 18 metres, then another dive, and on good weather days, another 3 hour break and a third dive, then lugging all the equipment off the boat again, and starting work on the finds.
nbsp
Time is so important, by the time weve gone down, and come up, weve got just over 45 minutes of work, and as the job is painstakingly slow, it takes a long time to bring up a simple piece of broken pot or piece of ore, every minute detail recorded manually and photographed.
Most of the work is shifting rocks, as the site is covered with them, the military having blasted the rocky outcrop which formerly crowned the site, to smithereens, all of which now lies on top of the excavation area. This is done using airbags to lift them up, but it slow work, and can take a whole dive to shift just one piece.
It wasnbsp humbling to work with this team, Pat, the photographer, turned out to be none other than Patrick Baker, winner of the BBC Wildlife photographer of the year twice, and a marine photographer whod worked on the Mary Rose and many other international excavations. Juan, the head archaeologist has undertaken more than 200 excavations throughout 40 years, whilst Murat, who humbly calls himself the technical guy, was on the front cover of National geographic when he worked on the Uluburun site, one of thenbspmost important underwater sites ever excavated.
Mark is from Texas, and the rest of the team are international, all volunteers, all unpaid, and all dedicated to this incredible project.
Its humbling to be welcomed as part of the team, and a privilege to be in contact with this project, and now the gags have been untied by the regional government, a luxury to be able to share the experience.
But none of it would have been possible had I not regained my confidence and just relaxed, because that was the core of my problem.
Taking a shore dive gave me the chance to slow the pace and embrace diving , instead of fighting the experience and stressing myself out, and theres no better place to do it than the edge of the Islas Hormigas wildlife reserve, with its amazing abundance of wildlife.
I went with Adventure Divers, and this isnt an advertorial, so I can honestly say it was a great experience and I wouldnt hesitate to say I felt as though I was in very safe hands.
nbsp
So thats how things go.
You just never know where life is going to take you.

Vuelta Ciclista a Espana, murcian stages.
Cycling fans might like to book the dates for the Vuelta ciclista a Espana in their diaries as we approach the beginning of this epic race in August.
The race will be passing through the Region of Murcia on the 1st September, entering from Granada towards Lorca, via Puerto Lumbreras, with Lorca as the final destination for stage 5.

Terra Natura Wildlife and water Park, Murcia

The Region of Murcias Water Park is open for the
summer in Murcia
THIS PAGE IS PRINTABLE.
The Terra Natura wildlife and water
park has opened the water section for the summer with an excellent value offer,
valid throughout the next three months when all we want to do is cool down and
get into the water.
nbsp
The Terra Natura complex is situated just on the outskirts of Murcia, near to
the major retail parks, and comprises a full wildlife park which is open all
year around and the water park which opens for the summer.
nbsp
It has over 300 animals, including Giraffes, from 50 different
species, including 3 endangered species and is themed into different areas,
with the animals living in spacious enclosures.
nbsp
The site has been landscaped with a vast range of trees and shrubs, giving
it a lush and authentic feel, and there are plenty of areas to entertain and
educate, and a number of different activities to enjoy.
nbsp
During the summer the waterpark is opened with a great selection of slides,
chutes, tubes and rivers, designed to wear out the kids and allow their parents
( or grandparents!) to relax and enjoy an exciting day out.
nbsp
There are chutes to suit all levels of water enthusiasts from the
adventure river which can be enjoyed on a single or double float, to the
Kamikaze, a high speed attraction which gives the sensation of free fall on a
roller coaster with various configurations.
nbsp
Theres also the black hole with strobe lighting or the speed hole and if
you prefer a less brain wobbling type of thrill, you can chill out on the
gentle chutes, bobble along on the tranquil river, or splash around in one of
the pools with their water towersnbsp and water games.
nbsp
An entry ticket gives full access to both areas, so visitors can choose how
energetic they want their day to be, but as theres so much to see and do, the
park have a special offer which is valid all summer.
nbsp
The offer is basically that if you buy an entry ticket for one day,
you can go back the next day for free, which makes the park a very attractive
proposition for those who have offspring to entertain for the week or are here
on holiday and have accommodation without swimming facilities.
nbsp
Its also a way of ensuring that those who come along with offspring have
the opportunity to visit the wildlife park, as its quite normal to rush off
and start bombing down the waterslides without having the opportunity to see
the other attractions the whole park has to offer.
nbsp
Bear in mind though, that the ticket is only valid for the day after
your first visit, and not at any other time. The Zoo opens from 10am and the Water Park
from 11am.

Would any of you like to join other ten pin bowlers on a thursday evening in Lorca?

These bowlers drive over from Camposol, Mazarron to Lorca, but could just as well be from Aguilas or Cehegin.
Weve been contacted by Brian and his friends who go to Lorca every Thursday evening to play ten pin bowls in a full sized alley. Their original enquiry was whether there might be other people in the Mazarron area who would like to car share and join them, as they drive up from Camposol to play, but are also very open to the possibility of meeting people from other areas who might like to join them in Lorca to play ,and broaden out the league. Lorca is a very easy drive from Aguilas, Caravaca, Cehegin, or across from the centre of the region- Totana or Alhama, so if youd like to join in with these guys why not send them an email and maybe get more of a regional league going.
Heres his information
nbsp
nbspnbspnbspnbspnbspWe are a group of men who enjoy Ten Pin Bowling. We are looking for more players men or women but only adults please.
nbspnbspnbspnbspnbsp We meet in Cats Bar on sector A Camposol every Thursday night at 20.00. We travel to a bowling alley in Lorca and always play 3 games, at a cost of euro3.00 per game (less in summer) price includes shoe hire. We car share to keep down the costs with each passenger paying his driver euro2.00 to help with fuel costs etc. So for an outlay of just euro11.00 + drinks you can enjoy a fun night out. We have a weekly competition that every player is entered into and a league that you can join if you wish. We operate a handicap system to give everyone a chance of winning. Normally we are back in Camposol by 11pm.nbsp
nbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspTo join our league costs an additional euro2.00 per week but for this younbspget a free night out on finals night that includes 3 games of bowling, food amp drinks, this takes place approximately every 15 weeks. You dont have to play every week to be in the league as only your 5 bestnbspscores (total of all 3 games played in one night)nbsp+ your finals night score count, but you must pay thenbsp euro2.00nbspfee, even for the weeks that you may have missed. If you cant go to finals night your fees, can be refunded or carried over to the following seasonnbsp.
If you are interested and want more information, contact me Brian Macey by E-mail macey.bri@hotmail.com or just call in Cats Bar on sector A Camposol any Thursday night between 8 amp 8.15 pm. I or one of the other players will be there.
