Mazarron Sports stadium not just a dream , but football financing nightmare continues
First stone laid in New Mazarron sports facilities
Mayor Blaya Blaya of Mazarron and a selection of assorted dignitaries today laid the first stone for Mazarrons' much awaited new sports stadium.
There seems to be a little disparity in the reports we have at the moment as the Town Hall version we've been sent talks only of the works being for the construction of the changing rooms for players and officials, whilst the email received from members of the Mazarron Football supporters club who were actually there at the ceremony includes the construction of two training pitches as well.
Although the Town hall version does mention amplification of the existing building to include extended changing facilities, store room, physio room , nurses room and café, it only talks about it all being constructed within an area of 563 square metres, but we're sure it must include the football pitches as well, as 470,000 euros sounds quite a lot for the changes listed otherwise.
The project is being financed by the autonomous community, with a small amount from the local Town Hall.
. Further development will see a football stadium with a covered stand, an indoor and outdoor swimming pools along with an athletics track, tennis courts and many other sporting facilities
Members of the football supporters club were present at the stone-laying ceremony, in which a time capsule was also buried containing newspapers and coins and were praised by the visiting regional dignitary with responsibility for public works, Maria Pedro Reverte who expressed her pleasure at witnessing the hard work put into the Mazarron team by the local ex-pat community.
The Mazarron Football supporters club also said today that they are relieved they have been continuing to pay the refs fees on behalf of the club during their recent spell of financial turbulence, following the news that Aguilas are in severe financial trouble.
Although the members of Aguilas voted for the continuation of the club earlier in the month, it is known that the players have not been paid for several months and that the club owes well in excess of a million euros to its creditors.
The Murcian football federation have stepped in and said that if the club wishes to play in their next game they must pay the referees cash on the nose, in advance, otherwise the game won't happen.
It's a sad end to one of the oldest teams in Spain, a team started by Brits when a large number of them were here working on the Aguilas Railway project last century, and which has a museum dedicated to it's team in Aguilas today.
As things look today, it's more than likely that the club will cease to exist before the end of the season.
But it doesn't stop there, as apparently Moratalla are rumoured to be unlikely to finish the season due to lack of funds and Lorca also hasn't paid it's players for several months.
Mazarron are still waiting for the anticipated subsidy from Mazarron council, but the supporters continue to do a sterling job plugging the gap for now.
There are just 2 games remaining this season.
