Gardening Club Meeting 30th January

28 / 01 / 2010

Gardening Club Meeting 30th JanuaryThe next meeting of the Gardening Club is Saturday 30th January at 2.30pm.

The venue is the Old School Hall at Canadas del Romero.

We have decided to move back to this venue for the next meeting in case of inclement weather, such as that which forced the cancellation in December.

At least if the weather is not so good this time, we can all squeeze inside for the talk and question and answer session and the rest can be outside.

Gardening Club Meeting 30th January The topic for this meeting is chemical spraying, something which needs further discussion due to the amount of problems currently experienced by many members in relation to the Red Palm Weevil and the Cochinilla del Carmin, as well as all the normal issues of aphid control, fluted scale insects and procession caterpillars.

We've asked Nigel, an English spraying specialist who has worked in agricultural spraying for the last 30 years to talk to you about it, as he's fully qualified to give you advice, answer your questions and talk about specific issues you may have.

If you've got any specific questions for him, email us in advance so we can make sure we allocate enough time if there are a lot of issues to deal with.

We'll also be bringing along examples of the latest pest to hit the area so you can see the Cochinilla del Carmen and be able to identify it easily if it appears near you, and be absolutely sure what the process is for dealing with it.

Gardening Club Meeting 30th JanuaryIn addition, we'll have the swaps table up and running, so if you have any plants, cuttings, produce, seeds, books and magazines, tools, containers or anything garden-related that you would like to exchange, please bring whatever you like.

If you want to sell anything, such as larger pieces of garden equipment , tools, or the odd larger plant, you're welcome to bring those along,(non-trade only!) although we take no responsibility for any monies exchanged- someone will be monitoring the swaps table and any transaction is between you and the purchaser.

If you have a citrus surplus, don't be shy about bagging up your surplus and selling it. I, for one, will be very happy to buy a bag of oranges (or two) at the meeting as we ourselves have none, so let's set a price of 1 euro a bag and not waste this fresh, healthy produce that surrounds us.

Gardening Club Meeting 30th JanuaryWe will also have help at hand to answer all your gardening queries, and the tea urn will be on full power to keep you supplied with tea and coffee and home made cakes.

The normal entry price is 2 euros, which includes your tea and cakes and a ticket for the raffle, which always has lots of plants up for grabs.

Visitors and non-members are charged 3 euros , as we believe that they should pay something towards the running costs if they're not paying 5 euros a year for membership. Members bringing a cake for the tea table do not pay subs and still get their raffle ticket, and anyone helping out for the meeting also does not pay subs, and still gets their raffle ticket.

If you would like to help out with the meeting, or bring a cake,  please let us know in advance, and we would be very grateful if we could have rough numbers for the meeting so we bake enough cake!

If you have a fold-up chair, please pop it in the boot, as there are never enough chairs at the Old School Hall, so we'd be grateful if there were a few extra available.

We really hope to see you at the next meeting and hope you'll all bring lots of swaps as we've been busy growing on lots of cuttings and could do with some new bits for the back beds!

If you're interested in joining us, read more info about the club and what we do.
