Mazarron Bowls Club at Saturday, 19th December, 2009.Mazarron Bowls Club

All to do in 2010.

At the end of its first full year of active existence, Mazarron Bowls Club can look back with some sense of satisfaction to its achievements - expanding Membership, improving facilities, satisfactory bank balance, healthy social ambience, vigorous domestic playing programmes, recognition by the Costa Blanca Bowls Associaion and the Federacion Española de Bolas, and successful entry as Mazarron Miners into the CBBA Regional League. In the New Year ahead the Club will continue to strive to consolidate, expand and develop in all these areas and particularly to welcome new Members whether experienced or new to the game.

In the CBBA League Mazarron Miners concluded the games for this year last Friday with a disappointing home defeat by five games to one last at the hands of La Marina Dolphins - thereby consigning Mazarron to the bottom half of the table of 14 teams for the first time after thirteen matches played. This latest defeat at home erodes a somewhat exemplary prior home record of only a single defeat from 8 matches played but nevertheless still emphasises the somewhat dismal performance at away venues of 5 defeats in 5 encounters.

Captain Colin Sear knows what needs to be done although in time increasing experience for the players on varied surfaces and conditions will assist to improve the record. Brian Robertson (Senior), the Club's most successful league skip conjointly with Jim Tarrant, won again in this latest match but only narrowly by 20 shots to 19, this time assisted by Keith Salter and emerging successful lead bowler Jack Brennan. In the other games Captain Colin Sear with the league team's most successful player overall, Sylvia Logue, at No2 and Barbara Male at lead just failed by that single point to swing the game their way at the same time as skip John Allaker with Harry Male and Pat Toppin went down by just two shots in their game.  The next match on January 8th is the new dawn - against Monte Mar Toreadors away from home.

Already victims to Mazarron at Hacienda in the first match of the season Monte Mar will be looking for revenge in the face of Mazarron's determination to notch a first victory on "foreign soil."

Domestically now a quiet time of year in terms of the Club's activity although open roll-ups on Tuesdays and Thursdays are always popular, the main activity is embodied in the Club Championship categories progressing slowly to the finals in March. Sylvia Logue is already through to the semi-finals of the Ladies' Singles while husband Robin Logue aspires to compete by reaching the quarter finals of the Men's Singles along with Richard Cooper at this moment.

In the Men's Pairs Jim tarrant with Nick Ford and Fred Godfrey with John Wright are though to the quarters and waiting for opponents to come through to join them. In January there will be more activity in the Triples and Rinks categories ahead of the start of the new Triples League competition in February.

Now as the weather finally deteriorates and thoughts turn to warm fires, Christmas pudding and hot toddy (me anyway!!), the bowling season draws to a close. But not without a touch of sparkle as on 29th December at Hacienda the Club hosts for the Members a Christmas and New Year event on the green with perhaps several Santa Claus (the more the merrier!), Christmas pies, a warm punch and a chance to make merry.

To all who have taken to reading these notes throughout the year we wish a very Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year in 2010. If you want to know about the Club or its activities then contact Richard Cooper on 968 131 619 or Doug Macfarlane at 968 429 980 or refer to the website www.mazarronbowlsclub.webs.com.
