27th December, Open race for all, 28 edición de la popular San Silvestre, Cartagena
13 / 12 / 2009
The annual Christmas urban race, 28 edición de la popular San Silvestre, takes place in Cartagena on 27th December, over a distance of 1km for the younger participants and 5km for everyone else. There are a wide range of categories, for all ages and sexes, and it is hoped to exceed the 1500 participants the race has attracted in previous years.
One euro of every entry fee is donated to the AECC, The Asociacion Espanol Contra Cancer and the fees are set at 2 euros for benjamines, alevines and infantiles, and 6 euros for everyone else.
As normal , there will be prizes for all categories, a commemorative sweat-top for all entrants, and prizes for the schools or groups who enter the most competitiors, as well as prizes for the most original costume. Well, this is Spain, isn't it, you didn't expect them to not have a costume or two in there somewhere did you ?????
The race for the youngsters is leaving from the Centro Cultural Ramón Alonso Luzzy at 10.30 and will be accompanied by Ronald McDonald!
The other classes leave from the Plaza del Ayuntamiento at 11.15am, so come and watch if you don't want to participate, but if you, or your family, or even visitors from the UK want to join in the race, they're welcome to do so.
In the summer we were ecstatic when the visiting children of one of our readers took part in a local race and went home with 2 big fat trophies in the hand luggage and left an ecstatic and proud grandparent here who sent us the photos, so come along and join in, this race is for everyone.
Registration is a bit of a faff. 5 euros extra is added on for the allocation of a chip, which will be returned to you at the end of the race when you give it back.
If you go to the townhall website www.cartagena.es and click on the button in the strip of events at the bottom, marked Popular San Silvestre you can see all this is Spanish. We've just roughly translated, but basically you have to pay the money into the given bank account, then go to the Municipal Sports centre with a form giving all your personal details and you'll be able to collect your number. There is no registratuion on the day which is a real pain for those who don't live in the middle of Cartagena.
May be made from 9th to 24th December
(until 14:00), logging 11 euros (6
and 5 registration deposit to be returned Chip
the end of the race) in the account No:
